NLP/Mindfulness Fitness
In July 2016, I (Monika) took over a fitness class for a charity called Just Good Friends, established to combat loneliness. Most of the participants are 60+ with a variety of illnesses and disabilities. They mainly focused on doing very gentle chair based exercises for 45 minutes, that was before I came along.
At first, I pre-framed the rules of the class.
Then I started to use music during the warm up with the option of walking or sitting on the chair and moving on the spot – they made the choice. I mainly chose music from 40’s, 50’s – Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, musicals etc. to get them back to their youth.
I introduced FUN TIME. We play games, use soft balls, hula hoops, skipping ropes. Those activities remind them of their childhood, they do not feel like they are exercising, there is no pressure. It completely shifts their energy, they forget their age.
In a month, I started to teach them easy dance steps with or without chair support. At the end of the class I do sometimes include light trance, taking them to a nice, relaxed place and giving them positive energy for the week to come.
We did Group Circle of Excellence combined with Anchoring to take them back to the time when they were healthy, full of energy, they created an anchor which they can trigger anytime they need more energy.
My whole class is based on fun. They are constantly reminded to relax their facial muscles by smiling and working on their posture. This allows the energy to flow through the body easily and stops any tension (based on walk with Grace & Power).
Now the class lasts 1.5 hour – 1 hour exercises + 0.5 hour fun games, dance, light trance, working with mind etc. Most of the people in the class now only use the chair as support for about 15 minutes.
In summer 2017 we’ve performed a dance routine to Justin Timberlake’s song ‘Can’t Stop This Feeling’ at Lytham Green and AKS Car Fest as part of the project – ‘Bridging The Generations’.
The feedback is amazing.
At first, I pre-framed the rules of the class.
- 1. Each person decides on the level of exercises, based on the fact that they know their own body better than anybody else.
- 2. Do the best you and only you can do.
- 3. Helpful self-esteeming. Compare yourself to only yourself a week/a month/a year ago.
- 4. Focusing on the positive. There is always some kind of exercise you can do (even if it’s just moving your fingers). Focus on what you can do.
- 5. Do what you enjoy and have fun.

The feedback is amazing.
